Cataracts
Post-Operative Care
You will be seen periodically over the first few months following your cataract surgery to make sure you are healing normally.
Post-Operative Insructions
There may be some minor itching in the eye after surgery. Eye drops and medication will minimize these feelings and prevent infection. Avoid rubbing or pressing your eye as it heals. Keep your eye clean and wash your hands before applying eyedrops or medication to it. Try not to bend over and pick things up or lift anything heavy. You may do normal light housework, walking and climbing stairs. Wear an eye shield or protective cover over the eye on the day of surgery if your doctor prescribes it. Wear dark glasses to protect the eye as it heals and an eye patch at night so that you don‘t accidentally rub your eye as you sleep.
All side effects and discomfort should disappear after one week, although eye drops should be continued as prescribed. It takes about eight weeks to heal from cataract surgery.
Report the following symptoms to your doctor immediately:
- Persistent pain which is not improved by pain medications.
- Vision loss.
- Double vision.
- An increase in redness in the eye.
- Bleeding.
- Light flashes or floating spots.
