Cataracts

Dr. Michael Marino and Dr. Elana Scheiner have extensive experience in cataract surgical co-management.  When you have cataract surgery, one of them will work with you throughout the procedure. They will examine your eyes and consult with you to make sure you are a candidate for cataract surgery and help you determine what type of surgery is best for you. If cataract surgery is not a good option, they will help you decide what other options are best for your eyes, goals and lifestyle. If you proceed with surgery, they will help prepare you for the surgery, schedule it,  and provide post-operative care and examinations.

Cataract surgery is an outpatient procedure performed at local cataract surgeon. We will provide you with medications to help prevent pain, reduce irritation and reduce your risk of infection as you recover. It is likely you will remain awake during the surgery, although some physicians may place you under mild sedation depending on your preferences and other health factors. The surgery is quick and painless. After a period of observation, you will be discharged and may return home. We will prescribe eye drops to help reduce infection and inflamation and redness. You may need to use them for up to a month.

You will return for a followup up visit a day or two after cataract surgery. Some patients need to wear a protective eye covering for the first few days to prevent rubbing of the eye. It will take up to a month for your vision to return completely. However, most patients can return to normal activities the day after or a couple days after surgery. You may need to see us for a new prescription for corrective lenses several weeks after your surgery.
