Your Children’s Eyes

Vision screening is an important way to identify vision problems that your child might have. During an exam, your eye care professional will check to see if your child’s eyes are working properly and make sure the child has no eye diseases. Children with a family history of childhood vision problems are more likely to have eye problems.

We treat children over one year old. It is important to have your child’s eyes checked regularly because some vision problems have no warning signs, and your child may not complain of vision problems. In addition to regular eye exams, your child should be checked if he or she develops any of the following:

  • White, grayish white, or yellow-colored material in the pupil.
  • Eyes that flutter quickly from side to side or up and down.
  • Eyes that look crossed, turn out, or don’t focus together.
  • Persistent eye pain, itching or discomfort.
  • Any change in how their eyes usually look.
  • Redness that doesn’t go away.
  • Excessive rubbing/squinting.
  • Eyes that are always watery.
  • Hypersensitivity to light.
  • Drooping eyelid(s).
  • Bulging eyes.
  • Pus or crust.
